Picture
It's the final week of the Museum's break down of the December 3rd 1991 script!

We ended part 3 just as the witches had arrived at the Dennison house and this final break down contains an ending that we can only wish had happened (as it was never filmed).

Expect more big changes and surprises as we dive into this script, one last time.

We begin the final part of the script inside Dave and Jenny's bedroom. Dave snuggles against Jenny "Now now, honey" she tells him. Dave still acting like he's Dad-Cula responds with "One little bite is all I ask" "You have to go to work tomorrow" "Work? In the daylight? Don't be ridiculous." Meanwhile a boney fingers begins to poke through the screen in the window and slowly tears it open, they then quietly sneak into the room, while Dave begins to kiss Jenny.
Picture
Winifred peeks over the foot of the bed to see Jenny and Dave now in a comatose state. She hears snoring but it's not coming from Max's parents, instead the spell has worked on Sarah and Mary too, so Winifred jolts them with electricity, which wakes them back up.

Back to the kids and Binx is once again asleep, but this time he's curled up on top of the book, Dani is fast asleep too. Max (armed with his bat) and Allison leave the basement. As Allison steps out the hairs on the back of her neck start going crazy, something isn't right. They enter the kitchen as the witches slowly and silently make their way down the stairs.

Max takes a box of salt from the shelf, "It says right here, "Form a circle to protect from zombies, witches and telemarketing surveys." Allison is still on edge, so to comfort her he takes her in his arms and holds her, it works and she relaxes slightly. He then grabs her hand and takes her back down to his bedroom. Dani is still asleep in Max's bed... but the book is now gone. They both start looking for the book and Max soon realises Binx is missing too. Panicked, he pulls back the covers to wake up Dani, but Mary is in her place, "Trick or Treat" she says.

The closet door flings open to reveal Winifred with her book, Sarah is right behind her holding Dani and a squirming sack that contains Binx. Max charges at Winifred with his baseball bat, but is knocked back when Winifred opens her book and a surge of evil power flings him into the wall, knocking him unconscious. Allison runs over to him and with salt in hand, throws a circle of salt around them both.
"Salt! How clever. But it will not save your little friends" Winifred says to her. She then blasts the windows open with a jolt of electricity and they take flight, with Binx and a screaming Dani with them.

The witches, now standing on the roof of their home, look out across Salem. "Evil things that peck and fly, the hour has come to fill the sky" Winifred opens her magic sack and hundreds of spectral crows fly out of it. They flock and swirl in the night sky before making their way through Salem. "Find them. Bring them" Winifred commands.
Picture
Max returns to consciousness and Allison tells him they took Dani. He runs to his parents bedroom but he finds them pale, almost like corpses. He desperately tries to wake them, but it's no use, they're under Winifred's spell. He sees the torn screen in the window and realises this is how they entered the house. He pounds on his parents to try and wake them up. "Oh man, you don't know how much you love your parents until you can't wake them up" he tells Allison, "I really messed up."

They gaze out of the window to see hundreds of children sleepwalking towards the Sanderson Sisters house. They leave the house and try to wake them up, shouting "It's a trap!" but they're all entranced by Winifred's magic. Max sees his friends Ben and Alan, but they pass right by him, ignoring his calls.

Allison asks Max if he can drive and the next minute they're in the car, after a few mistakes Max gets the car to start and Allison turns on the lights. After Allison tells him "We're a good team" they kiss passionately, but they don't have time to stop. With seatbelts buckled, Max attempts to leave the driveway "Parking break" Allison tells him "Right" he replies and then they're finally on their way. The Sanderson Sisters windows can be seen glowing on the hill above Salem.

Inside the witches cottage, Binx is hanging from a hook on the hearth and Billy lies dead in the corner. Jay and Ice hang in cages as Sarah and Mary force feed them both Candy. "I'm gonna puke!" Ice tells them, "No more candy please" shouts Jay. Sarah pulls out red liquorice and they both protests against it. Mary then takes a red hot poker out of the fire and moves it towards their bare feet, which instantly causes Jay and Ice to grab the liquorice and start eating it. Mary accidentally singes Sarah with the poker and she screams.

Dani is tied to a chair, while Winifred brews the potion they need to stay alive.
Picture
Dani closes her mouth as tight as she can, however Winifred has other victims in mind. She tells Ernie to drink and he objects. She turns her face into a mask of pure evil "Please" she asks him once more. Ernie drinks the potion out of fear, followed by Jay doing the same. For a moment nothing happens and then they both start to glow. "Whoa, we're glowing, man" says Jay. "It is the light of life" Winifred tells him.

The sisters stare for a moment as a beautiful aura of bright clear light appears around the boys head and shoulders and then, as Winifred puckers her lips, she begins to suck in deeply and continues until both of their auras have been consumed. Jay and Ice... are now old men.
Picture
The sisters close in on Dani, just as the sound of explosions rings out around the cottage. They turn to see Max standing in the doorway, where a bunch of lit firecrackers are now on the floor.

The scene where Max tricks them with daylight savings is almost identical here, the only real difference is what Max tells them "Daylight savings... it's kind of complicated to explain, but basically what it means is... the sun comes up a little earlier than it used to" and with that the sound of birds can be heard and a rosy light begins to shine through the windows.

"THE SUN" Mary shouts. "WE'RE DUST" replies Sarah, followed by them both shrieking at Winifred, "Save us, Winnie! Save us!  Save us!"

Max grabs the sacks containing Binx and frees him and then unties Dani. "Hey man, what's going on" Jay asks Max, "Ice, My name is Ice!" comes from Ernie, both of them are totally out of it and have no idea what's going on. Max then dumps out the cauldron and grabs the book, he heads for the door but Dani and Binx aren't following behind, instead they're waiting to see the witches turn to dust. He throws the book out the door and grabs Dani by the arm and Binx by his neck. "We want to see them turn to d..." shouts Dani, however she's has just realised what's actually going on. It's still dark outside and Allison is standing by the car, whistling like a bird. The headlights of the car are each covered by one of the breasts of Jenny's Madonna costume, which created the rosy light through the windows.
Picture
"You're driving great" Allison tells Max... just as he smashes the car through the witch house sign.

Back in the house and the Sanderson Sisters fly out of the door. "Where's everybody going?" asks Jay... followed by "I want a cigarette" from Ernie. Billy leaves the house too, following behind the witches. They soon spot the car and swoop down to attack.

Max sees Winifred flying alongside the car and he swerves to try and hit her, she ends up crashing into a clump of trees and Binx and Dani cheer him on from inside the car. Sarah and Mary both land on top of the moving car, so he slams on the breaks. Sarah who is standing on the roof, goes flying forward off the car and into the road. She gets back on her feet in the middle of the road, just in time to see Max driving directly towards her. With a grin on his face, he drives right into her and the car wheels can be felt driving right over her. Mary, still clinging to the passenger side, pokes her head upside down into the window next to Dani and without missing a beat, Dani winds the window up, wedging Mary's long nose tightly in it. She can't pull herself free and Binx takes the opportunity to swipe her nose, causing her to howl and drop from the car.

Moments later Max pulls up outside the graveyard and they scramble over the old stone wall to get inside. They find a clearing between the graves and Allison sprinkles a circle of salt around them all for protection. Allison and Max share a brief kiss as Dani and Binx watch "Oh yes" says Binx. He then notices the book is crawling towards the edge of the circle to escape and he quickly pounces on it. Dani sits on the book to hold it down for him.

With a full moon high in the sky, the witches arrive flying just above the kids. Allison shouts "This is hallowed ground" and Max takes a swing towards them with his bat.
Picture
Sarah whispers something into Winifred's ear and an evil laugh rings out from Winifred. They form a conjure circle, slowly turning and chanting in the air. The kids watch in fear below. "Whatever happens, we can't give up" Binx tells them.
Picture
Allison, now armed with a tree limb, stands next to Max, who is holding his baseball bat ready. "Bones... fetch my book!" Winifred commands the skeletons.

The skeletons rush at the kids. Max knocks the first one to pieces with his bat and Allison takes out another with her stick. One after the other, they keep charging towards the kids and each time they smash them to pieces. A dismembered arm crawls towards the book, which Dani is still sitting on and Binx pounces on it. It clutches around Binx's throat and Dani grabs it from him. She throws it across the graveyard and it smashes into pieces against one of the stones. The book begins to crawl away again and Dani quickly sits back down on it.
The skeletons keep pulling themselves back together, either partially or in new bizarre combinations. Allison's stick breaks and a skeleton grabs her. She calls out to Max for help and as he goes to swing at the skeleton, another one grabs his bat. They close in on Dani and Binx quickly leaves the circle, leaping onto a tree trunk. As the skeletons grab her "Let go of me, you bonehead!" she shouts at them.

With a shriek of delight from the witches above, Winifred asks the skeletons to give her the book and one of them tosses it up to her. The kids are in the grip of the skeletons below and just as Winifred gives out a laugh of triumph, Binx springs out from one of the tree branches and leaps through the air. He lands on Winifred and claws her viciously. She grabs him and throws him to ground with a thud.
Picture
Enraged, Winifred gets to her feet "Boy, you are mine" she says to Max, while Allison tells him to run. He holds his ground expecting Winifred to charge, but instead she starts turning stone grey. She's frozen to the ground. Winifred looks bewildered and then something starts sprouting from her back "Oh no!... Not this!... Anything but this!" she screams out. Wings rise from out of her back and the kids (and her sisters) watch as Winifred is transformed into a faceless stone sepulchral angel. Engraved in the base of stone Winifred reads "Winifred Sanderson. Born 1617... Hanged 1692... Died 1992."

Back to Sarah and Mary and they're screaming at the skeletons to kill the kids. "Obey Me!" Sarah shouts but the skeletons are no longer moving. Each skeleton falls to pieces and as the witches look bewildered at the piles of bones forming below, they hear the sound of birds tweeting. A pink glow starts rising in the east and as the first ray of dawn breaks through the trees, it hits them both and they instantly turn to dust. Winifred's broomstick, Sarah's broom and Mary's vacuum drop to the ground as their spell book also turns to dust too.

Everything has suddenly become peaceful and the kids head over to where Binx is. "Binx, we did it, man" says Max, but there is no response. "He's gone" says Allison after she gently touches him to check. "But he can't die. He can't! Binx, wake up" Dani pleads to him.
Picture
Thackery realises that the witches being gone means his curse is finally broken. "I'm free! At last I'm free!" he says as he spins around ecstatic. The kids are thrilled for him, but Dani begins to cry.

"Don't cry, Dani. Not for me" Thackery tells her. "But you're dead" she replies. "Life is wonderful, but death is part of it, like sleep at the end of a long day, and I've been waiting for it for such a long time." and with that Thackery gives a whoop of joy, he does cartwheels towards the rising sun, but not before telling all three of them "Life is short. Pounce on it!"

As Thackery disappears, a small meow can be heard. "Binx?" Dani asks the black cat in her lap. "I guess he still had one life left" Allison tells her. Dani asks if the cat can talk and a meow is given back. "That's ok" she tells the cat, as Max and Allison share an embrace.

Back to the Sanderson Sister's house and hundreds of sleeping children are suddenly waking up from Winifred's magic.
Picture
The children begin to make their way back down the hill and back to their homes. Inside the cottage, Jay and Ice are still in the cages, their youth restored. "Let us out of here" Jay shouts, followed by "Somebody call the cops" from Ernie.
Picture
Jenny blames "those Freddie movies" for last nights antics, while Dave replies with "It sounds more like a cult thing to me" "There are no cults in this town" "How do you know? Let's ask our panel of experts. What do you guys think?.... Hey, kids?" Dave says to the kids.

The kids are sprawled on the living room couches, all of them fast asleep from being up all night. "What, Dad?" Max groggily replies. "What do you think caused this witch house thing?" "Oh, uh, it was just a case of... bad candy" Max tells him, "Bad candy... definitely" Allison and Dani add.

The script ends with a close on Binx, who looks at the camera and meows, just as Max sneezes.

Hocus Pocus December 3rd 1991 Script part 2

T'is time... to dive into part 2 of the December 3rd 1991 script break down!

Part two includes a brand new montage scene with Binx that really should have been included in the film... you'll see why it possibly wasn't below and we also see another curse word... but this time from Binx!

Part 1 ended with the kids about to enter the Sanderson Sister's house... so let's get into what happens next!

The kids enter the cottage which is in complete darkness. Max uses the lighter he stole from Ernie to dimly light the room (lighter origin change). Inside the cottage three figures are huddled around a large cauldron, which causes Allison to scream, however she soon realises that they are just mannequins of the three sisters and not the actual witches themselves. Buckets of rain water are dotted around the cottage from the leaking roof above.

After reading about the spell book and the candle, the clouds outside drift apart to reveal a full moon, which lights up the room.
Picture
Now that Allison can also hear Binx, she begins to panic, "He says if we don't get out of here right now, we'll never get out!" she tells Max. Max however is confused as to why he can't hear what Binx is saying. "Only those that believe in magic can hear him speak" Dani tells him, which Max responds with "This is a classic case of chick hysteria."

Allison and Dani decide to leave, but Max is more concerned about leaving without Dani's trick or treating sack, as he knows his parents will kill him if he returns home empty handed. He starts looking around the house in a panic and as the clouds cover the moon once more, the room becomes much darker and harder to see. Without even thinking, Max uses his lighter to light a candle... THE candle. Dani and Binx both yowl in horror at what he has just done.
Picture
The kids run and hide, Max and Allison hide behind a wood pile and Dani jumps behind an overturned table. The sisters return to full form, suspended six feet off the ground before Winifred and Sarah gently float down to the floor, Mary however... she crashes down. They pat and blow out the last of the flames on their persons, although Mary's hat is still on fire.

As Winifred places her hand on a mannequin, it falls over and Sarah picks up the scent of children with her nose. "Let's pluck their eyes out!" Mary says before getting whacked by Winifred.

Winifred suddenly flips the table over to reveal a terrified Dani, she responds the same way in the film, however this time when Winifred says "such a pretty little girl (child)" Mary also chimes in with "pretty fingers. Pretty eyeballs."

Just as they're about to tear Dani apart, Max throws a bucket of rain water over Winifred, who becomes so angry that the water sizzles off her face. "It worked in the Wizard of Oz" says Max sheepishly. She zaps Max with a stream of crackling electrical energy, which is stopped when Dani hits her with a small pot.
Picture
The burning rain of death scene happens exactly how it does in the film however this time when Max responds with "You can talk" to Binx, Binx replies with...
Picture
Max is now able to hear Binx talk, as he has seen real magic with his own eyes and now believes. The kids flee the house just as Winifred realises that the 'burning rain of death', is just water. When they run out of the house to chase the children, they come to a stop when they see the town of Salem spread out and illuminated by thousands of lights below.

They reach the "black river" and notice a old sedan is parked near by. Mary asks what it is and Winifred responds with "'Tis a Ford... Obviously a vessel for fording this river." Sarah and Winifred then push Mary into the road, which makes them all realise that it is in fact... a road. They then run and hide in the bushes as a fire engine makes its way to the house.

Back to the kids and they've just made their way into the old cemetery.
Picture
In this version of the script we learn that the Sanderson Sister's actually stole Billy's body from the gallows and brought him back to life. They cut out his tongue and sewed up his mouth, so he couldn't share their secrets.

Back to the sisters and the firemen are just leaving the house. Mary says Sarah's line "What a pretty spider" before she starts plucking off its legs "One little leggie... two little leggies..." and then Sarah snatches it from Mary and eats it. There's a brief exchange where Winifred tells Sarah and Mary that they need to catch the children and Sarah responds with "Let them go. We will find others", Mary also complains that Sarah ate her spider, before Winifred calls them both fools.
Picture
The witches then grab their brooms and vacuum (which the handle smacks Mary in the face) and fly into the night, well... after a few bumpy attempts from Mary to get off the ground.

We now jump back to the kids and Binx in the graveyard and the following scene is one that I wish had been included in the film or at least had been filmed, so it was still out there somewhere. This scene focuses on Binx talking about his life as a cat and how it was easy and enjoyable... but then the years started to pass and we get a glimpse into what it was like for Binx. It's such a sad scene, and it's understandable as to why it didn't make it into the film.
Picture
Max asks Binx why he didn't kill himself and Binx tells them all that he did. Another montage occurs which sees Binx telling them how he threw himself down a well, ate poison berries, picked fights with bears, but he always survived and so he vowed to guard the Sanderson Sisters house and stop anyone who tried to bring them back from the dead.

As Allison is about to open the spell book, Binx dives onto it and tells her not to. Max tries to set it on fire but this time instead of nothing happening, the book exhales and the flame bursts into a ball, almost burning Max's hand. When asked why Binx didn't warn him, he responds with "Didn't feel like it."
Picture
Winifred has a small magical black sack that she wears on her belt. She pulls out a viper and throws it at Max, Binx pounces on it and kills it.

Sarah tells the children to give them the book and they'll be on their way. "No way, fatso!" Dani says back to her, "I'll be even fatter when I'm through with you" she responds back. The witches attempt to grab the book but can't get close enough, which leads Winifred to raise a certain man from the dead...
Picture
The kids follow Binx through the graveyard, as Billy chases them close behind, that is until a low hanging branch takes off his head. He fumbles around for it while the kids gain speed ahead, Just as they're about to reach a wall, Binx disappears into a hidden hole in the ground and the kids quickly follow.

Winifred commands Billy to go down into the hole and follow them and they fly off in the hopes of finding where they will reappear.

The kids and Binx are now in the sewers below Salem. Max uses his lighter to light the tunnels and they see the corners of coffins, skeleton feet and an occasional bony hand hanging out of the dirt overhead. Billy can be heard groaning behind them. "Uh-oh. It's Mildew Man" Allison calls him.

Back to the witches and they're flying over Salem. "The village is on fire!" says Sarah. "They are but lanterns. The world has changed... come" Winifred says back.

Returning back to the kids and Binx, Dani asks Allison if she likes her brother and Allison responds with a shrug. Binx tells Max that Allison does like him, but he needs to lighten up and suggests him bringing her a bird. Max tells him "You can save your advice. I'm more a dog person."
Picture
Winifred catches on quickly as to what the children are up to and she leads them up to a house. With her magic sack in hand, Mary and Sarah hold up their skirts in front of them and Winifred knocks the door. The door opens and a man dressed as a devil appears "Welcome to Hell" he says. Mary and Sarah believe him to be the "master", however Winifred is not convinced. Winifred tells him that they're seeking children and he drops a pieces of candy in her bag and her sister's skirts, telling her "well this will hold you off until you find some."
Picture
Winifred, realising what Halloween has become grabs a child and pulls of his mask. She says the same line in the film that causes Sarah to say the famous "Amuck! Amuck! Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!" however in this script, it's actually Mary saying it. Winifred tells them "See how they go from house to house collecting candy... well, we will give them candy too." and they all share an evil laugh.

It looks like Candy Crows might be making an appearance soon... stay tuned for part 3!
