Picture
It's the final week of the Museum's break down of the December 3rd 1991 script!

We ended part 3 just as the witches had arrived at the Dennison house and this final break down contains an ending that we can only wish had happened (as it was never filmed).

Expect more big changes and surprises as we dive into this script, one last time.

We begin the final part of the script inside Dave and Jenny's bedroom. Dave snuggles against Jenny "Now now, honey" she tells him. Dave still acting like he's Dad-Cula responds with "One little bite is all I ask" "You have to go to work tomorrow" "Work? In the daylight? Don't be ridiculous." Meanwhile a boney fingers begins to poke through the screen in the window and slowly tears it open, they then quietly sneak into the room, while Dave begins to kiss Jenny.
Picture
Winifred peeks over the foot of the bed to see Jenny and Dave now in a comatose state. She hears snoring but it's not coming from Max's parents, instead the spell has worked on Sarah and Mary too, so Winifred jolts them with electricity, which wakes them back up.

Back to the kids and Binx is once again asleep, but this time he's curled up on top of the book, Dani is fast asleep too. Max (armed with his bat) and Allison leave the basement. As Allison steps out the hairs on the back of her neck start going crazy, something isn't right. They enter the kitchen as the witches slowly and silently make their way down the stairs.

Max takes a box of salt from the shelf, "It says right here, "Form a circle to protect from zombies, witches and telemarketing surveys." Allison is still on edge, so to comfort her he takes her in his arms and holds her, it works and she relaxes slightly. He then grabs her hand and takes her back down to his bedroom. Dani is still asleep in Max's bed... but the book is now gone. They both start looking for the book and Max soon realises Binx is missing too. Panicked, he pulls back the covers to wake up Dani, but Mary is in her place, "Trick or Treat" she says.

The closet door flings open to reveal Winifred with her book, Sarah is right behind her holding Dani and a squirming sack that contains Binx. Max charges at Winifred with his baseball bat, but is knocked back when Winifred opens her book and a surge of evil power flings him into the wall, knocking him unconscious. Allison runs over to him and with salt in hand, throws a circle of salt around them both.
"Salt! How clever. But it will not save your little friends" Winifred says to her. She then blasts the windows open with a jolt of electricity and they take flight, with Binx and a screaming Dani with them.

The witches, now standing on the roof of their home, look out across Salem. "Evil things that peck and fly, the hour has come to fill the sky" Winifred opens her magic sack and hundreds of spectral crows fly out of it. They flock and swirl in the night sky before making their way through Salem. "Find them. Bring them" Winifred commands.
Picture
Max returns to consciousness and Allison tells him they took Dani. He runs to his parents bedroom but he finds them pale, almost like corpses. He desperately tries to wake them, but it's no use, they're under Winifred's spell. He sees the torn screen in the window and realises this is how they entered the house. He pounds on his parents to try and wake them up. "Oh man, you don't know how much you love your parents until you can't wake them up" he tells Allison, "I really messed up."

They gaze out of the window to see hundreds of children sleepwalking towards the Sanderson Sisters house. They leave the house and try to wake them up, shouting "It's a trap!" but they're all entranced by Winifred's magic. Max sees his friends Ben and Alan, but they pass right by him, ignoring his calls.

Allison asks Max if he can drive and the next minute they're in the car, after a few mistakes Max gets the car to start and Allison turns on the lights. After Allison tells him "We're a good team" they kiss passionately, but they don't have time to stop. With seatbelts buckled, Max attempts to leave the driveway "Parking break" Allison tells him "Right" he replies and then they're finally on their way. The Sanderson Sisters windows can be seen glowing on the hill above Salem.

Inside the witches cottage, Binx is hanging from a hook on the hearth and Billy lies dead in the corner. Jay and Ice hang in cages as Sarah and Mary force feed them both Candy. "I'm gonna puke!" Ice tells them, "No more candy please" shouts Jay. Sarah pulls out red liquorice and they both protests against it. Mary then takes a red hot poker out of the fire and moves it towards their bare feet, which instantly causes Jay and Ice to grab the liquorice and start eating it. Mary accidentally singes Sarah with the poker and she screams.

Dani is tied to a chair, while Winifred brews the potion they need to stay alive.
Picture
Dani closes her mouth as tight as she can, however Winifred has other victims in mind. She tells Ernie to drink and he objects. She turns her face into a mask of pure evil "Please" she asks him once more. Ernie drinks the potion out of fear, followed by Jay doing the same. For a moment nothing happens and then they both start to glow. "Whoa, we're glowing, man" says Jay. "It is the light of life" Winifred tells him.

The sisters stare for a moment as a beautiful aura of bright clear light appears around the boys head and shoulders and then, as Winifred puckers her lips, she begins to suck in deeply and continues until both of their auras have been consumed. Jay and Ice... are now old men.
Picture
The sisters close in on Dani, just as the sound of explosions rings out around the cottage. They turn to see Max standing in the doorway, where a bunch of lit firecrackers are now on the floor.

The scene where Max tricks them with daylight savings is almost identical here, the only real difference is what Max tells them "Daylight savings... it's kind of complicated to explain, but basically what it means is... the sun comes up a little earlier than it used to" and with that the sound of birds can be heard and a rosy light begins to shine through the windows.

"THE SUN" Mary shouts. "WE'RE DUST" replies Sarah, followed by them both shrieking at Winifred, "Save us, Winnie! Save us!  Save us!"

Max grabs the sacks containing Binx and frees him and then unties Dani. "Hey man, what's going on" Jay asks Max, "Ice, My name is Ice!" comes from Ernie, both of them are totally out of it and have no idea what's going on. Max then dumps out the cauldron and grabs the book, he heads for the door but Dani and Binx aren't following behind, instead they're waiting to see the witches turn to dust. He throws the book out the door and grabs Dani by the arm and Binx by his neck. "We want to see them turn to d..." shouts Dani, however she's has just realised what's actually going on. It's still dark outside and Allison is standing by the car, whistling like a bird. The headlights of the car are each covered by one of the breasts of Jenny's Madonna costume, which created the rosy light through the windows.
Picture
"You're driving great" Allison tells Max... just as he smashes the car through the witch house sign.

Back in the house and the Sanderson Sisters fly out of the door. "Where's everybody going?" asks Jay... followed by "I want a cigarette" from Ernie. Billy leaves the house too, following behind the witches. They soon spot the car and swoop down to attack.

Max sees Winifred flying alongside the car and he swerves to try and hit her, she ends up crashing into a clump of trees and Binx and Dani cheer him on from inside the car. Sarah and Mary both land on top of the moving car, so he slams on the breaks. Sarah who is standing on the roof, goes flying forward off the car and into the road. She gets back on her feet in the middle of the road, just in time to see Max driving directly towards her. With a grin on his face, he drives right into her and the car wheels can be felt driving right over her. Mary, still clinging to the passenger side, pokes her head upside down into the window next to Dani and without missing a beat, Dani winds the window up, wedging Mary's long nose tightly in it. She can't pull herself free and Binx takes the opportunity to swipe her nose, causing her to howl and drop from the car.

Moments later Max pulls up outside the graveyard and they scramble over the old stone wall to get inside. They find a clearing between the graves and Allison sprinkles a circle of salt around them all for protection. Allison and Max share a brief kiss as Dani and Binx watch "Oh yes" says Binx. He then notices the book is crawling towards the edge of the circle to escape and he quickly pounces on it. Dani sits on the book to hold it down for him.

With a full moon high in the sky, the witches arrive flying just above the kids. Allison shouts "This is hallowed ground" and Max takes a swing towards them with his bat.
Picture
Sarah whispers something into Winifred's ear and an evil laugh rings out from Winifred. They form a conjure circle, slowly turning and chanting in the air. The kids watch in fear below. "Whatever happens, we can't give up" Binx tells them.
Picture
Allison, now armed with a tree limb, stands next to Max, who is holding his baseball bat ready. "Bones... fetch my book!" Winifred commands the skeletons.

The skeletons rush at the kids. Max knocks the first one to pieces with his bat and Allison takes out another with her stick. One after the other, they keep charging towards the kids and each time they smash them to pieces. A dismembered arm crawls towards the book, which Dani is still sitting on and Binx pounces on it. It clutches around Binx's throat and Dani grabs it from him. She throws it across the graveyard and it smashes into pieces against one of the stones. The book begins to crawl away again and Dani quickly sits back down on it.
The skeletons keep pulling themselves back together, either partially or in new bizarre combinations. Allison's stick breaks and a skeleton grabs her. She calls out to Max for help and as he goes to swing at the skeleton, another one grabs his bat. They close in on Dani and Binx quickly leaves the circle, leaping onto a tree trunk. As the skeletons grab her "Let go of me, you bonehead!" she shouts at them.

With a shriek of delight from the witches above, Winifred asks the skeletons to give her the book and one of them tosses it up to her. The kids are in the grip of the skeletons below and just as Winifred gives out a laugh of triumph, Binx springs out from one of the tree branches and leaps through the air. He lands on Winifred and claws her viciously. She grabs him and throws him to ground with a thud.
Picture
Enraged, Winifred gets to her feet "Boy, you are mine" she says to Max, while Allison tells him to run. He holds his ground expecting Winifred to charge, but instead she starts turning stone grey. She's frozen to the ground. Winifred looks bewildered and then something starts sprouting from her back "Oh no!... Not this!... Anything but this!" she screams out. Wings rise from out of her back and the kids (and her sisters) watch as Winifred is transformed into a faceless stone sepulchral angel. Engraved in the base of stone Winifred reads "Winifred Sanderson. Born 1617... Hanged 1692... Died 1992."

Back to Sarah and Mary and they're screaming at the skeletons to kill the kids. "Obey Me!" Sarah shouts but the skeletons are no longer moving. Each skeleton falls to pieces and as the witches look bewildered at the piles of bones forming below, they hear the sound of birds tweeting. A pink glow starts rising in the east and as the first ray of dawn breaks through the trees, it hits them both and they instantly turn to dust. Winifred's broomstick, Sarah's broom and Mary's vacuum drop to the ground as their spell book also turns to dust too.

Everything has suddenly become peaceful and the kids head over to where Binx is. "Binx, we did it, man" says Max, but there is no response. "He's gone" says Allison after she gently touches him to check. "But he can't die. He can't! Binx, wake up" Dani pleads to him.
Picture
Thackery realises that the witches being gone means his curse is finally broken. "I'm free! At last I'm free!" he says as he spins around ecstatic. The kids are thrilled for him, but Dani begins to cry.

"Don't cry, Dani. Not for me" Thackery tells her. "But you're dead" she replies. "Life is wonderful, but death is part of it, like sleep at the end of a long day, and I've been waiting for it for such a long time." and with that Thackery gives a whoop of joy, he does cartwheels towards the rising sun, but not before telling all three of them "Life is short. Pounce on it!"

As Thackery disappears, a small meow can be heard. "Binx?" Dani asks the black cat in her lap. "I guess he still had one life left" Allison tells her. Dani asks if the cat can talk and a meow is given back. "That's ok" she tells the cat, as Max and Allison share an embrace.

Back to the Sanderson Sister's house and hundreds of sleeping children are suddenly waking up from Winifred's magic.
Picture
The children begin to make their way back down the hill and back to their homes. Inside the cottage, Jay and Ice are still in the cages, their youth restored. "Let us out of here" Jay shouts, followed by "Somebody call the cops" from Ernie.
Picture
Jenny blames "those Freddie movies" for last nights antics, while Dave replies with "It sounds more like a cult thing to me" "There are no cults in this town" "How do you know? Let's ask our panel of experts. What do you guys think?.... Hey, kids?" Dave says to the kids.

The kids are sprawled on the living room couches, all of them fast asleep from being up all night. "What, Dad?" Max groggily replies. "What do you think caused this witch house thing?" "Oh, uh, it was just a case of... bad candy" Max tells him, "Bad candy... definitely" Allison and Dani add.

The script ends with a close on Binx, who looks at the camera and meows, just as Max sneezes.

Hocus Pocus December 3RD 1991 Script Part 3

Picture
We're over halfway through October and part 3 of the December 3rd 1991 script break down is here!

In part 2 we learned more about Binx's sad past and how he tried to end his life, as well as a slightly different scene with the Master and ended with the Sanderson Sisters about to the lure the children with Candy Crows...

So let's pick up right where we left off!

We start part 3 back with Max, Dani, Allison and Binx. They're just about to leave the underground tunnel and Binx climbs out first, just as a car is about to hit him. Max grabs him by the tail and pulls him back in. "You almost got killed" Max says to Binx, "No such luck" he replies.

Billy is still close behind and as they hear him getting closer, they climb out of the tunnel and close the lid behind them. They see a cop and run over to him. There's a small line where Max asks if Binx can help him explain the situation, Binx responds with "It's your mouse." Max asks the cop if he understood what Binx said and the cop asks what the problem is. This scene is almost identical to what we see on screen, with some minor differences in what is said, but overall it's the same, that is until Allison asks for protection.
Picture
The kids run off from the 'cop' just as his girlfriend (dressed as Sheena, Queen of the Jungle) comes out of the store. They laugh at the kids thinking he's a real cop and then drive off on his bike, riding over a manhole cover that has a certain zombies fingers sticking out of it. There's a yowl that comes from below as the bike rides over them.

Back to the kids and Dani is hysterical, she thinks the cop was going to shoot Binx and even though Max and Allison tell her that he was just "being a wise guy", she doesn't calm down, until Binx tells her she can pet him if she wants. This does help.

Max apologises to Allison for the events of the night so far and says "Guess i've been sort of a jerk", which Allison responds with a shrug and "You can't help it. You're a guy."

Max then notices something through the bushes. It's his friends Alan and Ben from school. He walks over to them but they barely even notice him, they both acknowledge he's there but are too busy sucking on the candy they have and walk right past Max. Binx, sitting at Max's feet is concerned as to what they're sucking on and he runs after them both and the kids follow.

They're now on a small hill, on their stomachs, as they peer over a fallen log. Below are Winifred, Sarah and Mary, surrounded by costumed children. Winifred is taking candy out of the small sack on her belt and giving it to the children. As two children approach where they are hiding, Binx leaps onto one of the kids, which causes them to drop their candy.
Picture
Allison pulls the candy from Dani's mouth and throws it on the ground, where Max stomps on it. Dani returns to her senses and apologises. Max asks Binx why they're giving this candy to the children and Binx responds with "I don't know. But your friends are in danger." When Allison says they need help, Dani responds with "We need Mom and Dad."

While the children are talking, Sarah's nose catches a wiff of them "The children, the ones who store the book. They are near" and with that she starts sniffing and following her nose towards them. The kids have already left their hiding spot and just as the sisters arrive, Billy also comes charging at them. "Where have you been, you good for nothing corpse?" Winifred shouts at him and Sarah starts following the kids scent.

The kids are now at the town hall looking for their parents. The scene with Max trying to explain to his Dad about the events that have occurred so far is almost identical, with a few tiny changes in the lines. The same can also be said for the scene with Dani and her Mom. The witches enter the town hall and we cut back to the kids now with both parents together.
Picture
The witches have split up and are making their way through the crowds, hunting for the kids. A middle aged woman, dressed as Glinda from the Wizard of Oz asks Sarah "Are you a good witch, or a bad witch?" to which Sarah responds with 'the biggest, juiciest, smelliest fart in movie history.' Miss America who is standing behind them, passes out and a Indian Chief and Fidel Castro run for air. "Does that answer your question?"

Back to Max with his Dad Dave. He's starting to believe them when the Mayor of Salem (dressed as Long John Silver) steps on stage to announce the costume contest is about to begin. The contestants are dressed as Saddam Hussein, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Julia Child... While the mayor is calling out the contestants, Winifred spots Dani. She lets out a sharp whistle to get the attention of her sisters and Dani jumps on stage. She grabs the microphone and shouts "MAX! THEY'RE HERE!"

Max and Allison jump on stage and Max grabs the mic, he tells the townspeople that the "kids in this town are in great danger" and Allison shouts out "The Sanderson Sisters have returned from the grave!" Dani points at the sisters and the crowd turns to look at them. The Sanderson Sisters assume they've been caught and they bare their teeth and hold out their talons, threatening the crowd.

Picture
The kids leave the town hall and make a run for it. When they stop to catch their breath and also let Dani catch up with them, Max tells Allison "Oh man, they're going to do something terrible to our friends." "What should be do, Binx?" she says. "We have to destroy the witches ourselves."

Max tells Allison to take Dani home and both Dani and Allison tell him "Don't be so macho" they're in this together! "One thing I learned as a cat, when it comes to a fight, you want the females on your side" Binx tells him. There's a brief moment where they all hug, Dani declares "We're the Fearless Witch Fighters" and then they all share some of Dani's candy from her sack, that she's surprisingly still carrying. They then ponder how to burn the witches, just as Max spots them far down the street. Dani realises that Sarah is following their scent and Allison gets an idea of what they can do to destroy them. They then follow Allison to the school.

The witches and Billy follow their scent across the field towards the school. Mary points to the outdoor basketball hoops and after asking what they are, Sarah tell her they're "Gallows." Sarah and Mary gulp and rub their necks. "This is a prison for children" Winifred tells them. Sarah follows the scent to a broken window and they enter the school, not before Mary tells them "I'll wait here" and is then shoved inside.

Now in the schools locker room, Sarah opens a locker. "Tis for the little ones. They hang them off these hooks, then close the door" Mary says to her. "These vents let them breathe" Sarah adds. They then enter the swimming pool.
Picture
Winifred asks if the sisters understand how serious the matter of finding book is. "Oh yes, Winnie, and you've explained it so succinctly" Sarah tells her. "Explained what?" replies Mary. Winifred annoyed, jolts them both. Binx makes his presence known with "Meow there" and then asks if they're up a little chase. The witches mount their brooms and go after him, with Billy following behind.

They enter the corridors but Binx his gone, confused Winifred asks "Where did he go?" "Who?" replies Mary, who is then hit by Winifred. Sarah picks up Binx's scent just as Max calls to them from another direction. He holds up the book and then ducks down another corridor. The witches fly after him.
Picture
The kids leap out of hiding and lock the witches and Billy inside the kiln. The sisters realise they're trapped and push against the door.
"Let us out, you little wretches!... Or we'll tear your hearts out" Winifred shouts to them. Allison turns the kiln on and turns it up to full. Inside the kiln fills with flames. For a moment they feel a moment of pity, that is until Winifred's face is pressed up against the glass and she laughs insanely as she burns.

The kids now outside the school, run and dance ecstatically. The smoke from the kiln can be seen fuming into the night sky and forming into four large shapes. As Dani runs ahead whooping and screaming, Max and Allison are just about to share a kiss when Binx breaks up the moment with "Oh no."

The smoke above begins to take on distinctively human appearances and slowly the Sanderson Sisters and Billy begin to take form once again. They're coming back!

Binx realises that it didn't work because "they're not really alive." He tells the kids about what he overheard in the gym and he realises that the candle only brought them back for one night and when the suns comes up, they go back to the grave. They need the book to live. Together they realise that the witches need the book to survive and the Candy Crows are used to get the children. The book contains a spell that they need to complete their magic and so Max suggest keeping the book from them until the sun comes up. The witches and Billy return to form and their laughter can be heard from inside, as the kids run from the school.

Now walking down the street, Allison tells them that the witches can smell them wherever they go and with perfect timing, they see Jay and Ice up ahead. Max gets the idea to put their scent onto the two bullies.
Picture
Max takes of his sneakers, jacket and hat. Allison gives them both a hug, rubbing herself against them and Binx rubs himself against Ice's leg. Moments later Jay is wearing Max's clothes, Ernie is eating from Dani's candy bag and as they walk away, Ernie says "That guy is the mother of all twinkees."

Binx then takes the kids to his favourite restaurant... which just so happens to be a seafood restaurant called Cap'n Crabb's Seafood Palace. He takes them over to a dumpster that is filled with fish tails, heads and bones. Although Binx laps his chops, Dani holds her nose.

Two alley cats leap up onto the dumpster and Binx tells the kids that they're his friends, Half Tail and Love Bite. Binx and Love Bite had a "very heavy thing going, but now we're just good friends. She still brings me a mouse every now and then"  He then jumps into the dumpster and the kids follow, although Dani does protests slightly.

We then go into the point of view of Love Bite. She's licking her paws, but hears something. The witches and Billy approach her and she gives out a meow as a warning to the kids and Binx.

Sarah follows the scent of the children to the dumpster and looks down inside. It's full of fish parts, napkins, lobster claws... but no children, as they've buried themselves deep beneath the trash. She takes out a fish head to nibble on. "Well?" asks Winifred. "I've lost them" and Winifred smacks the fish head out of her hands. She then turns to Love Bite and with a charming manor says "Hello, Puss puss. Tell me, my pretty, would you like..." She pulls a living mouse out of her sack and dangles it in front of Love Bite. Sarah and Mary eye the mouse for themselves.

Winifred asks Love Bite if she's seen three children and a black cat and she responds with a meow to confirm she has. "Where did they go?" Winifred asks and Love Bite points her tail in the direction that the witches came from. Winifred angrily hisses at Love Bite, which frightens her and she drops the mouse on the floor. Mary and Sarah both dive for it, but luckily it escapes. Winifred calls them both Imbeciles and they all fly off in search of the kids once more, with Billy following behind.

When the kids climb out of the dumpster, they pick off bits of fish from themselves and Max suggests going back home, as the witches don't know where he lives. They can hide out there until sunrise.

Back to Jay and Ice and they're now walking through a wooded area. The lines from this scene are the same as when we see them outside houses late at night in the film. Jay asks Ice if he wants to smash pumpkins or watch babes undress and Ernie replies with "I don't feel so good." They look up and see Winifred, Sarah and Mary on their brooms, blocking their path.
Picture
They both make a cross with their fingers and hold it up towards the sisters, then both start laughing as they do this. "Out of the way, bags" Jay says to them and with that the sisters lift 6 feet off the ground. Jay and Ice soon realise that they are in fact real witches and with that they run... right into Billy, who grabs them both. The witches then take flight with Jay and Ice dangling from their broomsticks "Mommy" Ernie cries out.

Back at the Dennison house and we see a series of different shots. Max and Allison closing and locking all the windows, Allison sealing the cracks with wet paper towels, Max selecting his favourite baseball bat as a weapon and Dani feeding Binx some milk.
Picture
The famous line Binx says about being turned into a house cat ends with "Have to change my name to Muffy, or Fluffy" in this script. Binx settles down to rest on Max's pillow and as Max tells him to sleep, he replies with "Wish I could sleep forever..."

Suddenly an evil laugh is heard, reverberating through Max's room.... "Max, are you... asleep? Dave calls out. As they realise it's Dave, everyone relaxes and Max let's his Dad know he's still awake, by talking through a heating vent. He tells his dad that Dani is asleep in his room. Dave thanks Max for talking Dani trick or treating (also now talking back through the heating vent in the living room) and then he heads off to bed.

As Dave and Jenny head upstairs to bed, Jenny (amazed) says "He's letting her sleep down there?" "I think we've had a real breakthrough here. Sometimes a little flick of the parental whip just does the trick" Dave replies with, followed by "Do you smell fish?" from Jenny.

The witches are flying over Salem. Most of the lights below have now gone out, as it's deep into the night. They're looking for the kids still and are becoming increasingly frustrated at not finding them.

Back in Max's room, the kids are sitting on the couch looking at a sleeping Binx. Feeling bad for him, Allison suggests trying to help him... by looking in the book. "The witches used it to put the spell on him. Maybe there's a way to take it off" she says. Surprisingly Max doesn't think they should open the book at all, but after a little pleading from Allison and Dani, he agrees. Allison opens the book. "What kind of ink is that?" asks Dani, "It's blood" Allison replies.

As they look through the book, their hair gently starts to stream upward and a strange black and orange flame like force rises straight up out of the it. All three of them are completely oblivious to this. The strange flame flows through the ceiling and out of the house. Winifred sees it in the distance, "Look" she tells her sisters.
Picture
Suddenly Binx slams the book shut and leaps on top of it, keeping it shut and extinguishing the strange orange flame that has risen from it's pages. "I can't even take a cat nap around here!" "We were just trying to help you" Dani tells Binx, "Well don't!" he snaps back.

Outside... the witches have landed on the roof of the Dennison house... stay tuned for the fourth and final part.

Hocus Pocus December 3rd 1991 Script part 2

Picture
T'is time... to dive into part 2 of the December 3rd 1991 script break down!

Part two includes a brand new montage scene with Binx that really should have been included in the film... you'll see why it possibly wasn't below and we also see another curse word... but this time from Binx!

Part 1 ended with the kids about to enter the Sanderson Sister's house... so let's get into what happens next!

The kids enter the cottage which is in complete darkness. Max uses the lighter he stole from Ernie to dimly light the room (lighter origin change). Inside the cottage three figures are huddled around a large cauldron, which causes Allison to scream, however she soon realises that they are just mannequins of the three sisters and not the actual witches themselves. Buckets of rain water are dotted around the cottage from the leaking roof above.

After reading about the spell book and the candle, the clouds outside drift apart to reveal a full moon, which lights up the room.
Picture
Now that Allison can also hear Binx, she begins to panic, "He says if we don't get out of here right now, we'll never get out!" she tells Max. Max however is confused as to why he can't hear what Binx is saying. "Only those that believe in magic can hear him speak" Dani tells him, which Max responds with "This is a classic case of chick hysteria."

Allison and Dani decide to leave, but Max is more concerned about leaving without Dani's trick or treating sack, as he knows his parents will kill him if he returns home empty handed. He starts looking around the house in a panic and as the clouds cover the moon once more, the room becomes much darker and harder to see. Without even thinking, Max uses his lighter to light a candle... THE candle. Dani and Binx both yowl in horror at what he has just done.
Picture
The kids run and hide, Max and Allison hide behind a wood pile and Dani jumps behind an overturned table. The sisters return to full form, suspended six feet off the ground before Winifred and Sarah gently float down to the floor, Mary however... she crashes down. They pat and blow out the last of the flames on their persons, although Mary's hat is still on fire.

As Winifred places her hand on a mannequin, it falls over and Sarah picks up the scent of children with her nose. "Let's pluck their eyes out!" Mary says before getting whacked by Winifred.

Winifred suddenly flips the table over to reveal a terrified Dani, she responds the same way in the film, however this time when Winifred says "such a pretty little girl (child)" Mary also chimes in with "pretty fingers. Pretty eyeballs."

Just as they're about to tear Dani apart, Max throws a bucket of rain water over Winifred, who becomes so angry that the water sizzles off her face. "It worked in the Wizard of Oz" says Max sheepishly. She zaps Max with a stream of crackling electrical energy, which is stopped when Dani hits her with a small pot.
Picture
The burning rain of death scene happens exactly how it does in the film however this time when Max responds with "You can talk" to Binx, Binx replies with...
Picture
Max is now able to hear Binx talk, as he has seen real magic with his own eyes and now believes. The kids flee the house just as Winifred realises that the 'burning rain of death', is just water. When they run out of the house to chase the children, they come to a stop when they see the town of Salem spread out and illuminated by thousands of lights below.

They reach the "black river" and notice a old sedan is parked near by. Mary asks what it is and Winifred responds with "'Tis a Ford... Obviously a vessel for fording this river." Sarah and Winifred then push Mary into the road, which makes them all realise that it is in fact... a road. They then run and hide in the bushes as a fire engine makes its way to the house.

Back to the kids and they've just made their way into the old cemetery.
Picture
In this version of the script we learn that the Sanderson Sister's actually stole Billy's body from the gallows and brought him back to life. They cut out his tongue and sewed up his mouth, so he couldn't share their secrets.

Back to the sisters and the firemen are just leaving the house. Mary says Sarah's line "What a pretty spider" before she starts plucking off its legs "One little leggie... two little leggies..." and then Sarah snatches it from Mary and eats it. There's a brief exchange where Winifred tells Sarah and Mary that they need to catch the children and Sarah responds with "Let them go. We will find others", Mary also complains that Sarah ate her spider, before Winifred calls them both fools.
Picture
The witches then grab their brooms and vacuum (which the handle smacks Mary in the face) and fly into the night, well... after a few bumpy attempts from Mary to get off the ground.

We now jump back to the kids and Binx in the graveyard and the following scene is one that I wish had been included in the film or at least had been filmed, so it was still out there somewhere. This scene focuses on Binx talking about his life as a cat and how it was easy and enjoyable... but then the years started to pass and we get a glimpse into what it was like for Binx. It's such a sad scene, and it's understandable as to why it didn't make it into the film.
Picture
Max asks Binx why he didn't kill himself and Binx tells them all that he did. Another montage occurs which sees Binx telling them how he threw himself down a well, ate poison berries, picked fights with bears, but he always survived and so he vowed to guard the Sanderson Sisters house and stop anyone who tried to bring them back from the dead.

As Allison is about to open the spell book, Binx dives onto it and tells her not to. Max tries to set it on fire but this time instead of nothing happening, the book exhales and the flame bursts into a ball, almost burning Max's hand. When asked why Binx didn't warn him, he responds with "Didn't feel like it."
Picture
Winifred has a small magical black sack that she wears on her belt. She pulls out a viper and throws it at Max, Binx pounces on it and kills it.

Sarah tells the children to give them the book and they'll be on their way. "No way, fatso!" Dani says back to her, "I'll be even fatter when I'm through with you" she responds back. The witches attempt to grab the book but can't get close enough, which leads Winifred to raise a certain man from the dead...
Picture
The kids follow Binx through the graveyard, as Billy chases them close behind, that is until a low hanging branch takes off his head. He fumbles around for it while the kids gain speed ahead, Just as they're about to reach a wall, Binx disappears into a hidden hole in the ground and the kids quickly follow.

Winifred commands Billy to go down into the hole and follow them and they fly off in the hopes of finding where they will reappear.

The kids and Binx are now in the sewers below Salem. Max uses his lighter to light the tunnels and they see the corners of coffins, skeleton feet and an occasional bony hand hanging out of the dirt overhead. Billy can be heard groaning behind them. "Uh-oh. It's Mildew Man" Allison calls him.

Back to the witches and they're flying over Salem. "The village is on fire!" says Sarah. "They are but lanterns. The world has changed... come" Winifred says back.

Returning back to the kids and Binx, Dani asks Allison if she likes her brother and Allison responds with a shrug. Binx tells Max that Allison does like him, but he needs to lighten up and suggests him bringing her a bird. Max tells him "You can save your advice. I'm more a dog person."
Picture
Winifred catches on quickly as to what the children are up to and she leads them up to a house. With her magic sack in hand, Mary and Sarah hold up their skirts in front of them and Winifred knocks the door. The door opens and a man dressed as a devil appears "Welcome to Hell" he says. Mary and Sarah believe him to be the "master", however Winifred is not convinced. Winifred tells him that they're seeking children and he drops a pieces of candy in her bag and her sister's skirts, telling her "well this will hold you off until you find some."
Picture
Winifred, realising what Halloween has become grabs a child and pulls of his mask. She says the same line in the film that causes Sarah to say the famous "Amuck! Amuck! Amuck! Amuck! Amuck!" however in this script, it's actually Mary saying it. Winifred tells them "See how they go from house to house collecting candy... well, we will give them candy too." and they all share an evil laugh.

It looks like Candy Crows might be making an appearance soon... stay tuned for part 3!

Hocus Pocus December 3rd 1991 Script part 1

It's October... which means it's nearly time for a virgin to light the black flame candle and bring our three favourite witches back from the dead!

However until then the Museum has a special month long treat for you all. All month you'll be able to read a full breakdown of the third draft of the original Hocus Pocus script!

This script is dated December 3rd 1991 and was the original script that resulted in the movie being greenlit!

Within its pages are large and small changes, different characters, a very different ending and surprisingly... the odd curse word here and there.

Along with the script, the Museum will also be sharing concept art, which some of you might have not seen before. So before the sun sets... let's get into part one of this month long celebration!

The opening sees the Sanderson Sister's cottage on a high hill looking over the village below. Smoke slowly rising from the chimney as the bushes below part to reveal Thackery Binx, aged 17 and his sister Emily, aged "six or seven years younger."

The smoke rising from the chimney is forming into shapes of "little demons and beasts." They both make their way over to the cottage and peer in through the window.

Inside are Winifred, Sarah and Mary. All three are "very old and dressed in heavy black woolen clothing of the era, they look like exactly what they are... witches".
Picture
Unlike what we see on screen, Sarah is the one who can smell out the children. The three sisters look out of the window to see if anything or anyone is outside and as Emily and Thackery duck down, a "ghostly white form can be seen approaching through the darkness."

We're then introduced to our first new character, a young boy named James Wickerson, who is the new Emily... as Emily survives!
Picture
Back inside the cottage the potion is now ready. Winifred declares "'Tis ready for tasting" and Mary is just about to taste it herself when Winifred gives her a "painful backhand."

An entranced James is just about to drink the potion when Thackery bursts through the door to save him. He throws a stool at Winifred, who jumps clear and ends up "flicking the contents of the spoon on Mary, whom it sizzles." As Thackery continues his attack with a iron pot hook of the wall, Winifred grabs her book and tells Sarah and Mary to "Get him, you fools!"

Sarah shoves Mary at Thackery shouting "Get him, you fool!" and Thackery hits Mary on the head. "Winifred, now furious starts gathering power for a major electrical discharge". Thackery however, manages to overturn the large cauldron and as he makes a run for the door, Winifred "nails him with a massive jolt of electricity and he goes down." Moments later he wakes up to see the witches "three ugly faces" staring down at him and Winifred asks "What shall we do with him, sisters?"
Picture
And with that Thackery is turned into a cat, just as an angry mob of torch bearing townspeople enter the sister's cottage, they take the Sanderson Sister's outside and prepare them for hanging.
Picture
We then jump to 1993 where class is in session, Miss Olin is telling the story of the Sanderson Sisters and instead of scaring the class with a jump scare, something bounces of Allison's head...a big black rubber spider.

A new character called Ben is trying not to laugh next to her, before shaking his head and pointing to Max Dennison. 15 year old Max is trying to look cool, but instead looks "embarrassed as hell", as he was actually aiming for Ben. Allison gives him an "icy stare" and tells him that he's "less than scum"... ouch!

The next major change is that in this script, Allison has only just moved here, not Max. The class ends and Max, Ben and another new character Alan all head out of the school. They discuss how they blew it with "a decent looking babe in this town" just as Allison walks past. She gives them all the cold shoulder and as she walks past, Alan declares "I'm in love."

We learn that Allison has just moved to Salem from Tarzana, California and her parents purchased the Captains Mansion on Chestnut Street and after a brief chat between the three about how much Allison is just their type, Max puts on his sunglasses and walks after her. They begin talking after Max apologises and asks "how do you like Salem?". Allison responds with "The leaves are nice, but the guys are dweebs", "We grow on you" he says.
Picture
Allison then asks if Max is afraid of the Witches...
Picture
After Max declares Halloween as being "invented by the candy companies" Allison puts him in his place by saying an almost identical speech that we hear on screen  "Halloween, is based on All Hallows Eve, the one night of the year when the spirits of the dead can supposedly return to earth... so I guess you don't know everything. Bye" and she walks off, leaving Max behind.

Ben and Alan walk up to make fun of Max as Max watches Allison walking away.

We then jump to Max riding his bike past an empty lot (location change). Jay and Ernie step into his path and although Max is afraid of them both, he "feels a compulsive need to be accepted by them." They offer him a cigarette, which Max takes and they discuss Halloween.
Picture
The conversation quickly turns to Max's new cross trainers and as Jay asks to try them on, Max makes a quick exit out of there. Jay calls Max a "twinkee" as he rides away and Ernie realises Max stole his lighter.

We now jump to the Dennison house, Max has just returned home to Jenny and Dave (his parents) discussing how Dave wants a safari jacket from a catalogue. Max quickly cuts through the house after being asked how school was, "Sucked" he says, "Hey! Language!" shouts Dave.

Instead of being in the attic in this script, Max's room is now in the basement. He goes down into his room with cookies and milk. He flops down onto his bed and starts eating the cookies. He hears a "ghost-like voice calling his name" and for a second he's frightened, but soon realises it's Dani, "Cut it out, Dani!"

His seven year old sisters comes bursting out of the closet with a "high pitched witchy cackle." She's wearing an eccentric witch's costume, with chicken bone earrings, fifties glasses, blood red lipstick and a ratty old stole. She lies on Max's bed, takes a cookie and asks if he likes her costume. They then argue about Max not taking Dani trick or treating and she runs up the stairs screaming for her parents and then we get our first curse word...
Picture
Just like the deleted scene that is included in the 25th Anniversary Blu Ray, Max and Dave talk about Max taking Dani trick or treating and Dave tells Max "if you don't or if you foul up in any way, you can forget about getting your driver's permit this year."

And with that... Max is now taking Dani trick or treating. Dani has her route planned for the night and she asks Max where his costume is? "I'm a dope dealer" he says. Dani tells him it's unacceptable and Max changes his answer to "I'm a baseball player." They then head out to go trick or treating, but not before Jenny adjusts Dani's costume and Dave asks Max "What are you supposed to be anyway? "A Rap Singer."

There's a brief chat between Jenny and Dave about how Dave "straightened him out" and then as they go to get the camera to take a picture of the kids, Max and Dani run for it.

Max is nervous while taking Dani trick or treating, he keeps looking around in case someone recognises him "If you'd worn a real costume, nobody would recognise you" Dani tells him... she has a very good point.
Picture
The first house they go to is the Devil (or the master as we know him). This scene isn't in the film at all, but it's fun to see how Max and Dani also interact with him too.

Following from this there is a montage of them going to different houses and Max giving different responses when asked about his costume:

"I'm a blind center fielder... I'm an emotionally disturbed teenage zombie... I'm an illegal alien from Finland.... I'm her brother..."

We then jump to the kids walking down a street and them coming face to face with Jay and Ice. We're also given our second curse word from Max...
Picture
The interaction between all of them happens almost the same as we see on screen. Ernie refers to Max as "Maxi-pad" and when Max tells them he's taking Dani trick or treating he tells them "she's emotionally disturbed." It results in Max giving them one of the two sacks of candy they had, Ernie shouts "So long, twinkee" as they run away and the boys laugh behind them.

Dani tells Max he should have beaten him (Ernie) up and Max responds by letting Dani know that she "humiliated me in front of half the guys in school! So just collect your candy and shut the hell up!" This makes Dani cry.
Picture
Max then makes Dani jump by tickling her and after she laugh she responds with "Let's go, jerkface."

They continue trick or treating and make their way onto Chestnut Street, Max remembers Allison lives on this street and wants to go down it, but Dani protests "It's all rich people. They make you bob for apples and drink cider." "We'll just do one house, come on" Max says and Dani follows.

They make their way to Allison's house and ring the bell, the bell "has a very rich old fashioned doorbelly sound" and Allison answers the door, she's costumed "very sexily as a princess of mars." Dani soon realises why Max wanted to go to this particular house and they go inside. Allison offers them cider, which Max accepts and Dani says to Allison "My brother's got the hots for you", Max almost chokes on his cider.

Allison tells Dani that she likes her costume and Max asks how the party is going. Allison tells them both that she's bored and Max offers to "liven things up for you" by taking her to the Sanderson Sister's cottage. Dani is shocked, but Allison is interested, she goes to get her jacket and Max makes a deal to take Dani trick or treating next year.

Jump to the hillside at night. The kids are making their way to the Sanderson Cottage. Dani tells Allison that they found "the bones of a hundred children buried in this hillside" and Max pretends to throw a thigh bone at them, "It's a stick. I hate him" Dani says.
Picture
They make their way closer to the house, when a dark shape runs across their path. Allison is a little freaked out and shouts "what was that?" In front of them they see a pair of yellow eyes shining in the moonlight. Soon realising it's a cat, Dani shout's "It's THE cat!" and the cat then begins yowling at them, making a very human "Mee Yooow" sound.

"It's talking to us! Can't you hear it?" Dani says to them both. Max however throws a stone at it, which appears to hurt the cat and it disappears into the shadows. Allison tells Max off, while Dani is trying to tell him that the cat was talking, it was telling them to "Get out, Get out!" but Max doesn't believe her.

Moments later Max uses his pocket knife through the crack in the window and undoes the latch and enters the cottage...

Stay tuned for part 2!
